Dealing With Disasters - Training

Exercises

The Dealing With Disasters team has written and conducted hundreds of school drills and exercises, ranging from school staff-only “tabletop discussions” to “full-scale” community-wide exercises. School drills available include “Drop, Cover and Hold”, Fire Drills, Shelter-in-Place, and Evacuation Drills. Full-scale Exercises can be designed for any potential emergency that could happen to a school site.

By administration’s choice, these exercises may include moulaged victims, simulated trapped students and collapsed buildings. In the full-scale exercises, school teams wear full safety gear and use emergency response tools, radios, and equipment. Students simulate injuries with victim cards and even simulated parents may enter campus to test the check-out procedures. A de-briefing is included in the training that identifies the gaps in the plan and generates a what to-do-next list in the preparation process.
